《慟哭之星》採用名為「哭泣戰鬥動作 RPG」的獨特遊戲系統，展現出融合美少女、淚水與黑暗的異世界的世界觀。本遊戲擁有美麗的插圖與華麗的場景設計，講述異能覺醒的主角「零」為了復活因自身失誤而死亡的妹妹「未來」，而在死後世界「邊獄」中戰鬥的故事。

玩家須在實際戰鬥的死後世界「邊獄」，與能作戰鬥準備及確認所獲得物品的現實世界中往返來進行遊戲。在死後世界「邊獄」擊倒幽者和幽鬼，痛苦的死亡悲鳴將會附著到主角身上，等回到現實中的自己房間，便能藉由流淚淨化死亡悲鳴。同時也能透過淨化來獲得戰鬥所需的裝備道具等。
